Mama Red & the Dark Blues are back to break the drought. After a short hiatus, the band are back in the saddle and looking to rock the stage with some big, bolshy, power protest music. They’ll take you on a wild ride through their recently released conscious concept album, Long Way to Redemption, and throw in a few faves from the first album and some stellar covers just for fun.
Described as ‘Alt-Folk with a hint of blues’, but messing with genres, gender stereotypes and refusing to be stylistically confined, the band’s eclecticism and originality is part of its charm. In true Dark Blues form, the tunes are heavy with heart-wrenching harmony, moving fearlessly across genres, but woven together seamlessly through lyrical narrative and some dark Australian Gothic storytelling.
Featuring Harry Deluxe, a lead vocalist who can simply blow the speakers, and combining a posse of the State’s most talented musicians with some seriously sexy harmonies, Mama Red & The Dark Blues deserve your undivided attention. And beware… if you don’t give it, you may have it taken by force.
Line-up:
Lead Vocals - Harry Deluxe
Harmony Vocals – Melanie Bainbridge
Harmony Vocals – Therese Cruise
Guitar – Al James
Bass – John Wilson
Drums – Holly Norman
Didgeridoo – Sanshi

Words Can Change the World breaks open the music industry, and explores its darker impacts on independent musicians.
21st Century Dingo Productions presents Words Can Change the World, a live reading and interactive early work exploration.
The creative team behind five sell-out seasons of A Saucy Little Secret are back, and working on a new, collaborative multi-arts theatre work, with a powerful arts collective of local theatre-makers, musicians, artists and writers.
This performance is created as a teaser for a full theatre work, a character driven piece about the life of musicians in our time, using the original music of Mama Red & the Dark Blues as its frame.
The co-created production follows the semi-fictionalised experiences of five independent musicians in the 21st century, exploring some of the pervasive pain points in the music industry, from financial stress, sexual harassment, ageism, sexism and political invisibility, to depression and creative frustration, and drawing on the lived experience of the contributing artists and their creative communities.
While it follows some stark emotional ebbs and flows, the show’s ultimate resolution is powerful and uplifting, reminding audiences of the power of the creative arts to not only entertain, but to have lasting impacts on the social fabric of our time.
This unique co-creation approach to theatre-making is an opportunity for early audiences to contribute to the development of the full production, which will be fully realised for an early 2023 launch. The live reading and musical performances are performed by some of Perth’s best emerging and established performers, and invites the audience to provide feedback and ideas to the creative team.
Punctuated by original music from Mama Red & the Dark Blues, with stellar string arrangements by Charles Hoernemann, this unique performance experience comes to The Ellington Jazz Club for one night only, Friday August 12, 2022.

Mama Red & the Dark Blues – Music Industry Fundraiser
Mama Red & the Dark Blues would like to thank all of the incredible friends and fans who continue to come to our shows and support original music. We are truly grateful.
Like many of you, we have friends and colleagues across the music community who are struggling hard at this time, having been affected be the devastating Wooroloo fires, or by the COVID-19 Pandemic. So, we would love to ask if you would help us to help our community.
How can we do that? We’re so glad you asked!
Mama Red & the Dark Blues will be donating a significant portion of our artist fee from this gig to struggling WA musicians and the venues and arts workers that support the arts and the live music industry.
We know how important and necessary it has been to keep our community safe at this time, but our industry has been slow to recover, as capacity and financial issues have made it difficult for venues to continue programming live music, and with Jobkeeper soon to end we fear this might become even harder.
While there are a number of fundraisers happening across the country, as original Western Australian artists ourselves, we wanted to provide you an opportunity to direct your funds specifically to WA artists if you choose.
If you want to amplify your support, you can add a little (or a lot) to our Industry Fundraiser page at this link: https://www.mycause.com.au/.../mama-red-the-dark-blues..., and we’ll make sure your generous donation gets to the Artist Relief Fund WA, to provide targeted financial assistance to WA arts workers experiencing severe hardship.
We are extremely grateful to all of you who support Mama Red & the Dark Blues and other local original musicians, and to The Ellington Jazz Club and other WA owned and operated live music venues, so this is just one small thing that we can do, to pass on some of the great support our audiences have given us over the years to those doing it hard.
Some come along and join Mama Red & the Dark Blues as we play and sing our hearts out for our industry.
With love and gratitude,
Harry, Melanie and the crew from Mama Red & the Dark Blues and The Pack Australia.
